The fragrance we call Terengganu Sultan derives from Aquilaria Hirta, a treasure so extraordinarily rare that it is found in only one place on earth – Terengganu, a sultanate of Malaysia by the South China Sea. Here, the species is cultivated in deceptively small trees that are tucked away, even concealed, among the forested hills. But there is nothing shy or fragile about the scent. In fact, it boasts such an uncompromising strength that we would go as far as to call it imperious. The designation title of “Sultan” bestowed speaks of its might – a force as great as any fragrance has yet attained.

The very first tones are irresistibly fresh, almost balsamic, and reminiscent of the warmth of ancient frankincense, but with the arresting tang of bitter undertones. These recede before a sweetness that compels, as the middle notes insinuate themselves. By now, you are starting to appreciate the experience that is under way, an unprecedented scenario that has made you a part of the action. As the final hues of woodland billow and settle, you realise you are held captive. All you can do is surrender to the fragrance, as their subjects obeyed the will of the sultans in times immemorial.
